All About Me, Sam!

Hey, I grew up in Coventry with one older brother Scott, who actually named me Samantha! My mum and dad couldn’t decide… And Scott’s girlfriend was Sam. Everyone liked it and that was it, need to add there that Scott was only four!

I met my best friend Gayle at playgroup and to this day we are still best buddies aww! Growing up was great, Dads Welsh and an avid Rugby fan. In fact, if you cut him in half, it would say WELSH, and RUGBY ha-ha.

Rugby!

Of course, I played, it would have been rude not too! I was prop and would take on anyone (not much has changed). At the ripe old age of 6 my Mum dropped the bombshell, that I was becoming too much of a tom boy at the rugby club. And what else would I fancy having a go at? My friend Sharon and her sis Leanne had joined a local dancing school, so I thought yes, I will try that.

Abbey School Of Dancing

We went along to the Abbey school of dancing. I had to put my name on the list and was asked to start in a few weeks’ time. I remember it now, getting ready, feeling so excited. The 2nd in command was in that night Helen and she said you’ll have to come back next week when Gills here. I remember trying so hard holding my breath, so I didn’t cry. I was gutted! Another 7 days came around and Acro was absolutely amazing. I went on to do tap, modern and ballet exams competitions.

It was in me, and all I wanted to do. Spare time when not dancing was spent dancing. We used to put shows on! My neighbours Sharon and Leanne had a garage with a record player, disco lights and even carpet down so we didn’t scrape or hurt ourselves. These were some of the best times.

As school becomes more serious a couple of the older girls went to dance and drama colleges in London. I hoped that maybe I could do this. We held a save our school concert at Binley Park. Myself and my dancing friends did what we did best.

Drama Audition

One teacher at school Mr Huitson really helped me organising my drama audition. I don’t think I would have been offered a place without his help. Yes, I could sing and dance, but the competition was strong so really needed all the help I could get.

Talking of teachers at Binley it’s a known fact that I really had a bad crush on the German teacher! Tell you all about that another time!

I was super lucky to be offered a place at Redroofs and my mum and dad were always my biggest supporters.

College should be amazing and mine was! From concerts, exams, method acting as well as everything pantos! Learning dialect and with a bunch of new friends from all around the UK. I had a moped in the first year to get about and a motorbike in year 2 that my dad fixed a few times he would just say don’t tell your mum.

ITV and the BBC

College ended we all took our diplomas home in performing and stage management. Well then, all the auditions started. I used to work in the pub and travel about doing extra work for ITV and the BBC.

I already had my equity card from doing clowning at kid’s parties whilst at Redroofs. I went for an audition for Haven Warner. I got the first season and had just passed my car test in time to drive all the way to Hastings for the training seminar, before driving to my first season at St Minver in Cornwall.

I loved it, keep fit classes, talent shows, karaoke as well as kids clubs and comparing. I was hilarious at bingo! I loved it so much from February to the end of October. It was such hard work, but I was made for it. Learning my craft, doing lights and sound, watching all the cabaret artists.

The Band

The resident bands used to invite me up on stage. I realised I could do this! So, at the end of that season, I started working on an act sang in a band. They all kept falling out, so I thought, do it on your own Sam! Then no-one can let you down.

I entered a talent show Search for A Star Coventry. I enjoyed it and two brothers, who were agents asked me, would I like to work for them at all the MB Pubs around the West Midlands? That was that it was crazy! I would travel Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings. Then I started doing ten-day tours in South Wales.

Omg my dad was bursting with pride. My Welsh family would come and support, then Scotland, Stoke on Trent, Nottingham, Derby and up the Northeast – why aye ya bugga hahaha.

After the girls were born, I didn’t stay away. They would get dressed up and come to local clubs.
Then the standard of work declined, maybe as I wasn’t travelling so much. As well as, the smoking ban license, opening hour changes and the recession. Then in 2009 I had a prolapsed womb operation, and decided to hang my microphone up, could still cry over it now.

Wit Woo Beauty

I had my first proper job, and also my son Vinny was born. I decided to retrain in something, but what? Mmmm Beauty! Yes I quite fancy that! As I’m naturally a bit arty, things came quite naturally. Now here we are, I absolutely love working for myself and running Wit Woo since 2018. When you are content to simply be yourself, and don’t compare or compete you realise very little is needed to make a great life. It’s all within yourself, in your way of thinking.
